Australian Citizenship for Children: A Parent's Guide

Citizenship by birth, by descent, and by application — how to secure Australian citizenship for your child at every age.

Listen to the intro

Born in Australia A child born in Australia is an Australian citizen automatically if at least one parent is an Australian citizen or permanent resident at the time of birth.

Born overseas to an Australian citizen You can apply for "citizenship by descent." There's no age limit, but it's easier to do while the child is young — bring the parent's citizenship certificate and the child's full birth certificate.

Applying for a child who is a permanent resident Children under 16 can be included on a parent's citizenship application, or apply on their own with a parent's consent. They don't need to sit the test.

Common pitfalls Get the child's name spelled identically across every document. Small differences (middle names, hyphens) trigger delays. Keep certified copies of every original you submit.
