Once you become a citizen, here's how to get your first Australian passport — documents, photo rules, fees, and processing times.

Listen to the intro

When can you apply? You can apply for an Australian passport once you've received your citizenship certificate. Many people apply within days of their citizenship ceremony.

Documents you'll need - Your Australian citizenship certificate (or evidence of citizenship) - Photo ID with signature - Two passport photos taken in the last 6 months - A guarantor who has known you for at least 12 months

Processing times Standard processing is usually 6 weeks. Priority processing (extra fee) is around 2 business days. Apply early if you have travel planned.

Children's passports Both parents (or all people with parental responsibility) generally need to sign the application. Plan ahead if a parent lives overseas.
