Australian Citizenship Eligibility: Do You Qualify?

The residence, character, and language requirements for citizenship by conferral — explained in plain English.

Listen to the intro

General residence requirement You generally need to have lived in Australia on a valid visa for the past 4 years, including the last 12 months as a permanent resident. Absences from Australia can't add up to more than 12 months over those 4 years (and no more than 90 days in the final 12 months).

Character requirement Applicants must be of good character. Past criminal history doesn't automatically disqualify you, but you must declare it honestly.

Language and knowledge You'll need basic English and an understanding of the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship — what the test measures.

Intent to live in Australia You must intend to live in, or maintain a close and continuing association with, Australia.

When to apply early Check the date you became a permanent resident — many people miscount and apply too early, which triggers an automatic refusal.
