Quick answers to the questions we get most often about eligibility, the test, fees, dual citizenship, and timelines.

Listen to the intro

How much does it cost? The standard application fee changes from time to time. Always check the Department of Home Affairs website for the current amount before applying.

Can I keep my original citizenship? Australia allows dual citizenship. Whether your country of origin does is a separate question — check with their embassy.

How long does the whole process take? Most applications are decided within 12 months, but it varies. After your decision, you'll be invited to a citizenship ceremony, usually within 6 months.

Do I need perfect English? No. You need basic English to understand the test, but ceremonies and forms are designed to be accessible. Interpreters can be arranged for the interview if needed.

What if I'm over 60? Applicants 60 and over may not need to sit the test. They'll still attend an interview to confirm identity and understanding.
